Natuurcontact in het internationale Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het Kind
Een kinderrecht op natuurcontact kan een belangrijke bijdrage kan leveren aan het herstel van de relatie van kinderen met de natuur. Vooralsnog ontbreekt dit fundamentele recht in het Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het kind van de Verenigde Naties. Stichting wAarde is daarom in 2008 een initiatief gestart om een nieuw mondiaal kinderrecht op natuurcontact te ontwerpen en te laten opnemen in het kader van het Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het kind (VRK).
Vervolg van het project
Inmiddels (voorjaar 2010) is het project een tweede fase ingegaan en is overgedragen aan het Natuurcolege en IUCN.
 Achtergrond
De afgelopen decennia is relatie van kinderen met de natuur ingrijpend veranderd. Veel kinderen komen nauwelijks meer in contact met de natuur, simpelweg omdat de natuur grotendeels uit hun dagelijkse leven is verdwenen. Natuur is een schaars goed aan het worden in een kinderleven. Dit is het gevolg van een aantal ontwikkelingen dat wereldwijd plaatsvindt. Zo wonen er inmiddels meer mensen in steden dan op het platteland: een novum in de geschiedenis van de mensheid. Ook is er sprake van een teloorgang van de natuur in het algemeen. Het gebrek aan contact met de natuur is een onwenselijke situatie. In de eerste plaats omdat direct contact met de natuur van essentieel belang is voor de gezondheid en de ontwikkeling van kinderen. En omdat kinderen zélf een diepgewortelde behoefte hebben aan contact met de natuur. In de tweede plaats omdat de huidige en de komende generaties kinderen geconfronteerd zullen worden met gigantische milieuproblemen. Het zijn de kinderen van nu die duurzame ontwikkeling moeten gaan realiseren. In hun jeugd moet daarvoor een basis worden gelegd in de vorm van positieve ervaringen met de natuur.
Internationale en nationale steunbetuigingen
Steeds meer non gouvernementele organisaties op het gebied van natuur & milieu en/of kinderrechten uit landen over de hele wereld, waaronder India, Korea, Jordanië, Uganda, Tanzania, Brazilië, Mexico, de Verenigde Staten, Portugal en Italië sluiten zich bij het initiatief aan.
Ook Nederlandse organisaties zoals Milieudefensie/Friends of the Earth, De Kleine Aarde en Stichting Veldwerk Nederland steunen het initiatief.

Brochure
Er is een brochure verschenen over het kinderrecht op natuurcontact. In deze brochure vindt u uitgebreide informatie over dit kinderrecht en het doel van het project. De brochure bevat tevens een oproep aan maatschappelijke organisaties ons standpunt te onderschrijven.

Over de auteur
Dr. Annelies Henstra is sinds 2007 projectleider Kinderrecht op Natuurcontact. Zij studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit Utrecht en promoveerde in 2002 op het proefschrift `Van afstammingsrecht naar ouderschapsrecht’, een onderwerp dat nog steeds volop in de politieke belangstelling staat. Van 1996 tot 2006 was Annelies Henstra werkzaam als onderzoeker bij de onderzoeksschool Rechten van de Mens en als universitair docent op de rechtenfaculteit van de Universiteit Utrecht. Zij is gespecialiseerd in mensenrechten van kinderen en vrouwen en doceerde onder andere Internationaal Milieurecht.

Contact with Nature in the international Convention on the Rights of the Child
A child’s right to contact with nature can make a valuable contribution to the restoration of the relationship between children and nature. At the moment this fundamental right is absent from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. For that reason wAarde Foundation has started an initiative which aims to create and include a child’s right to contact with nature within the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Background
During the past decades the relationship between children and nature has changed radically. Many children are scarcely in touch with nature, simply because nature has largely disappeared from their everyday life. Nature is a rare commodity in a childhood. This lack is the result of a number of developments that have taken place worldwide. Thus there are now more people living in cities than in rural areas: a novelty in the history of mankind. Another important factor is the loss of nature in general. The lack of contact with nature is a serious situation. In the first place, it is serious because direct exposure to nature is essential for the health and the development of children. Children themselves mention a deep-seated need to have con-tact with nature. In the second place the development is disturbing because current and future generations of children will be faced with huge environmental problems. The children of today will have to realize sustainable development. For that purpose a foundation has to be laid in their youth in the form of positive experiences with nature.
International and national support
More and more non-governmental organizations from countries all over the world, including India, Korea, Jordan, Uganda, Tanzania, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Portugal and Italy are joining in the initiative. Also Dutch organizations, such as Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth), De Kleine Aarde and Foundation Veldwerk Nederland support our initiative.

About the author
Dr. Annelies Henstra is project leader of the Child’s Right to Contact with Nature since 2007. She studied Law at Utrecht University. In 2002 she obtained her doctor’s degree with the thesis From filliation law to parental law, a subject that still receives a lot of political attention. From 1996 to 2006 Annelies Henstra was a researcher at the School of Human Rights Research and a university lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Utrecht University. She is specialized in human rights of children and women and has been teaching International Environmental Law.
